Outreach

Outreach is an important component of WASIC's mission.

If you are interested in the SIC funding your 2026 project or event, we kindly request that you submit this form by September 30, 2025. For lumber donation requests, please submit this form at least four months before you need the lumber.

Below are images and information from different events the committee has been involved with or financially supported. If your event, project, or initiative was funded by WASIC, please fill out and return this Impact Report so that we can document our impact in the community.

- 44 attended 1 or more sessions (36 from western WA, 5 from eastern WA, 3 from Oregon)
- 32 attended the Silviculture and Ecology session

- 26 attended the DNR Forest Practices session
- 35 attended the Logging Business Management Session

Number of MLP currently certified as of 9/26/2024 = 769 from 340 different companies.
101 of the 769 have the "Onsite Supervisor" designation.

2025 Lumber donation to UW Department of Architecture

During the spring, graduate architecture students in the Barry Onouye Endowed Studio in the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington designed a reciprocal timber vault of interlocking 'W' shaped modules. Made entirely of dimensional lumber, this pavilion highlights the strength and beauty of Washington-grown timber. Led by Associate Professor Tyler Sprague, and visiting instructors Leif Johnson & Marne Zahner of StructureCraft, the design was inspired by a Leonardo daVinci sketch, making the vault was self-supporting at all stages of construction (with no need for scaffolding or falsework). Simple connections were a combination of notches and fasteners to minimize waste and maximize future potential. The studio owes special thanks to Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Washington Implementation Committee, and Sierra Pacific & Hampton Family Forests for the donation of Washington-grown timber.

Career Exploration Expo 10/24/24

Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce Career Expo. 520 9-12th graders attended from 7 school districts in Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties as well as Lower Columbia College students. Hosted at LCC in Longview. WASIC attended to share information about sustainable forestry and career paths. JR Hendershott (pictured here), Manager of Forest Products and Development at Peterson CAT, generously contributed a skidder for this event.

Lumber donation to UW Department of Architecture

"During the 2024 spring quarter, over 100 undergraduate students in Architecture at UW worked in groups to design and build 22 different benches from WASIC donated lumber. These were placed all around campus, for all students, staff and community members to enjoy. All the students learned about the responsible sourcing of lumber, and got hands-on experience working in the UW woodshop. Many of the students took their benches home, for interior use. It is so valuable for students to work with real, local materials as part of their education."
