Sustainable Forestry Initiative

Washington SIC: Education

In Washington, the SFI® program works with schools, universities, landowner groups, public agencies and the public to foster educational opportunities that promote sustainable forestry.

In 2009 the Washington state SIC began donating $500 and custom SFI t-shirts to the winners of the state FFA forestry contest so that these deserving students could attend the national FFA forestry contest held each year in Indianapolis.  The team from Mt. Baker High School has won the state competition and gone on to represent Washington state nationally for five consecutive years.

In 2011 the team from Mt. Baker High School placed fourth in the nation at the National FFA Forestry Career Development Event.  This is the highest a team from Washington State has placed.
